Like it or lump it, we Americans are obsessed with celebrity couples. Their every word and deed in public is in print within hours, publishers pay top dollar for photos taken in intimate or compromising situations, and often times our hopes and dreams are dashed to pieces when a relationship between two of our favorite celebrities comes to an end. What is it about the relationships of the rich and famous that draws us in emotionally? Is it a love of life imitating art when they are actors or performers? Whatever our reasons, the fact of the matter is that many of us get deeply attached to our own concept of Hollywood romances, and often do not fare well when many of those storybook endings fail to materialize.
Thandie Newton and Brad Pitt
Before Brengelina, Brad and Thandie were quite the hot topic of discussion. They met in 1994 while filming Interview with the Vampire, and proceeded to date for about a year. They were beautiful and popular, but as just about everyone knows, it wasn’t meant to be.
Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter
The king and queen of Goth gave every impression of being a permanent fixture among celebrity couples, but sadly they called it quits in 2014 after 13 years of marriage and two children. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake
One of the original power couples of the early 2000s, Justin and Britney actually boosted both of their profiles when they went public with their relationship. Sadly, by 2002 it was all over, and Timberlake threw some serious shade in Britney’s direction, devastating both Britney and her fanbase.
Perrie Edwards and Zayn Malik
Edwards and Malik gave every appearance of being a picture-perfect celebrity relationship: famous boy band member meets famous girl band member, they date, and then they get engaged. For four years, they are everyone’s favorite couple...until suddenly Zayn dumped Perrie abruptly in 2015. Allegedly via text. Classy.
David Arquette and Courteney Cox
These two lovebirds paired up at the height of Courteney’s Friends fame. Everything seemed to be sunshine and roses for a long time, and they even had a daughter together, naming Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston as little Coco’s godmother. In 2010, however, the couple called a halt to their relationship, and officially divorced in 2013, much to their fans disappointment.
Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz
Lenny and Lisa were the “it” couple of the late 80s, beginning their whirlwind romance by eloping in 1987, with Bonet giving birth to their daughter Zoe in 1988. Soon after though, things began to go downhill between Bonet and Kravitz, and they split in 1993 among rumors of infidelity, though they have remained good friends ever since.
Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins
The relationship these two shared was a marriage in every sense but the legal one, lasting from 1988 until 2009. As they had two children together and had lasted so long, many of their fans were quite surprised to hear that they were calling it quits.
Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts
Always a drama-free, low-key Hollywood couple, no one ever thought that Watts and Schreiber wouldn’t go the distance. Sadly, after eleven years together and the birth of two sons, they called an end to their relationship in 2016.
Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey
Carey and Cannon were together for six years, separating in 2014 and finalizing their divorce in 2016. “I never thought I would have babies with someone and then get divorced,” Mariah told Complex in a 2916 interview. Unfortunately for fans of the power couple, that is exactly what happened.
Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt
It goes without saying that Brad has dated many of his fellow celebrities, but Jenn was supposed to be his one and only when they married in 2000. All was well and fans rejoiced in the couple’s storybook romance, right up until 2005 when Angelina Jolie and the ensuing slew of bad press brought an end to Hollywood’s golden couple.
Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams
As these two were co-stars in one of the most romantic films of all time (The Notebook), fans were near-delirious with joy when it was made public that the two were sharing romance off the silver screen as well. In the end though, the on-off relationship came to an end in 2008 when they called it quits for good.
Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift

Seal commented after the fact that he had never really been a fan of the extravagant renewal ceremonies anyway.
Will Arnett and Amy Poehler
No one ever expected this comedy power couple to split after nine years together, but in 2012 they announced that they were bringing and end to their relationship. Poehler put it best when she wrote this line in her book: “Getting a divorce really sucks.” The world couldn’t agree more.
Demi Moore and Bruce Willis
Nothing shows how emotionally involved fans were in the relationship between Willis and Moore like the way that even 16 years after the couple divorced, the occasional rumor that they are getting back together still floats around the internet from time to time. This is, of course, incredibly unlikely, as the couple may have spent 11 years together, but it’s been over for a long time now.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
Hollywood’s super couple for 12 years , Pitt and Jolie were America’s sweethearts even after the ugliness of Pitts heartbreaking split from Jennifer Aniston in 2005. They have since both become somewhat less well liked since their very public divorce that began just a few short months ago.
